The word for today is magnanimous, which means generous or forgiving especially towards a weak rival. It originates from the latin: Magnus - great and animus - soul or mind. Hence, great soul or great mind.
This is certainly an excellent which one should have. It is not easy to restraint oneself from taking action towards a worthy rival when opportunities arise. The one who is strong will stop short of unleashing his or her anger towards the enemy due to this praiseworthy trait.
Being magnanimous means to absorb all anger and ill-feeling towards others in a situation where one can justifiably take counter action from others' follies. Being forgiving and then being generous to others, even when at one point in time we were the victims.
Certainly it is not easy being magnanimous.
